Semyon thought of Owen and decided that when the time came, he’d push for his friend to join their core group. Although he barely knew the kid, at least he felt comfortable with him, which was more than he could say for anyone in this lavish parlor. Allie made him nervous because she was beautiful and way too confident; Jake, the bloated law student, was a complete unknown; and Victor, in his ever-changing suits, a sprightly, charismatic genius who had set up a fake-ID machine in some exchangeable girlfriend’s Back Bay mansion, was as wild a card as an extra ace in a blackjack shoe.

He had a nearly photographic memory when it came to cards—an extension of his math and computer abilities, but more a product of his drive. He wasn’t treating this like a hobby, as many of the other kids were. Semyon didn’t have time for hobbies. He didn’t have parents paying his way through MIT; in fact, he was the one sending checks home to his father, who still lived in Houston in the same shit-hole apartment where Semyon had spent his high-school days. When Semyon wasn’t studying for his classes or practicing blackjack, he was working late nights in the computer lab, making the few extra dollars he needed to eat, fixing broken circuit boards and reprogramming bugged-out software.

He zipped his jacket halfway up his chest, then prepared to head back out into the airport. He wondered if Allie was already on her way to the meeting place. On Victor’s suggestion, they had decided to split up the minute they left the plane. Victor had assured them that there was no reason for them to expect any sort of surveillance, but it was always good practice to remain cautious. The two of them had no reason to be seen together coming off a plane from Boston, or to be together in the airport; their act began at the casino, not in a domestic airport terminal.
