Strategy is a concept that has different definitions (Mintzberg, 1998). The previous hypotheses interpret strategy as positioning (Porter, 1980) and refer to the source of competitive advantage that the firm relies on to outperform competitors. An alternative definition of strategy views competitive advantage as internal to the company and linked to its capabilities and resource endowments (Prahalad & Hamel, 1990; Wernerfelt, 1984).

Does the complexity of the task affect the extent to which individuals attempt to learn? Is there an interaction between task difficulty and the incentive system? e. a natural desire to do better, or whether it is the result of a rational allocation of cognitive effort? A question that one of our students is exploring is the relative effectiveness of a piece rate versus a tournament in motivating the participants to expend effort to understand a task. It would appear reasonable to assume that greater potential rewards do lead to greater effort.
